Australians like to brag about their high minimum wage, but they don't talk about all the ways employers avoid actually paying for hours worked. Not just in diving - taking advantage of young people on work visas is a huge industry here. Typically young people wait until the last moment to put in their work requirements for the visa and end up getting trapped by the worst employers who know they have to get the hours in.
My wife
I wish I could get to go Diving more than I am now. Between Work and Financial problems, I might get to go until Aug.
It cut off at the end, but I would love to learn more about how these projects work and why we're in this situation!

this is an excellent reason to use tec numbering (one-handed), there's no mistaking 70 with a 7 there.

Hello
18 years old you thought you were on the gravy train then
Oh I was! Instead of cafe minimum wage I was happily scuba diving with sharks
I once had an Open Water Diver (OWD) student who needed four extra pool sessions and two additional open water dives to confidently master the skill of removing and replacing his mask. 🤿 Despite the initial challenges, he persevered and has since completed over 300 dives. For the past eight years, he has been diving with us twice annually, demonstrating his dedication to the sport and his trust in our guidance.
Yeah but how to afford it
Get a job in diving? You can volunteer to get started
Im already an instructor - most instructors cant afford the time to train. Most competitors either have off season where they make money and/or have remote work/and or wealthy or already retired. It’s a very privileged crowd in general. @@OceanPancake
They GOT beached, they couldn't literally beach themselves knowing they won't survive it on their own.
It's how I drown my sorrows. I have too many now
I'm sorry to hear that
@@OceanPancake Thank you. This year I have been involved in 2 Auto Accidents. 1st wasn't my fault. 2nd? Not entirely my fault. As the person who hit me was Cited. My job Transferred me to a location 3 times the distance. Making less money.
Khilji aaya hoga😅
You are very lucky that you live in Aussy
I definitely am! Proud of my eighteen year old self for making that choice
I don't care if she molests sharks because if its unwanted touching... well it will most likely be the last time she touches anything, and I probably won't lose much sleep over it.
Tell me how we can relocate there and my wife and I would be your dive buddies. We don't have much experience but really want more.
Where are you based now? Australia is a hard place to migrate to, but it's so beautiful
@@OceanPancake we live in the USA. South Carolina more precisely.
I earn just a little bit more than double of that in a month!
In America? I am talking about Australian dollars 🦘
Been diving there last October. Absolutely stunning!!
Did you??
@@OceanPancake yeah was beautiful. Visibility was stunning
How much did i actually make in each country? 🪸 🐟 🐳 A lot to explain in a minute (check out the full video) or the description of the short. In Australia I predominately got offered day rates between $180-$250 a day. But this could be good for short days, but frequently the days lasted 10-12h. Cambodia payed by commission, around $20 per diver or then around $60 per course I signed a diver up for. In Comoros, I was paid a monthly salary of 1000 euro. Which was pretty good consider food and accommodation was included.
So you ignored the question???😅
A lot to explain in a minute (check out the full video on my channel) or the description of the short. But summary : In Australia I predominately got offered day rates between $180-$250 a day. But this could be good for short days, but frequently the days lasted 10-12h making it a lot less good. Last place I got offered a job was easily 13h days for 240$ a day. Cambodia payed by commission, around $20 per diver or then around $60 per course I signed a diver up for. That was pretty good as cost of living was very low, but I had to depend on my own savings to travel back and forth. In Comoros, I was paid a monthly salary of 1000 euro. Which was pretty good consider food and accommodation was included.
Cambodia
Cambodia was commission based :)
A video about how you make , to not tell anyone the answer? 👎🏻

@@OceanPancake US Dollars aren't as strong as they once were. If I work 8 Hours, I earn $128 before Taxes.
wow! You've been to malapascua! Been dive guiding here for a while, I hope you could come back!
It's the best place I've dived :)
I've always had an interest in instructing. But when an office job pays 40% more for 1/8 of the responsibility, its hard to consider diving as a career. Luckily i get plenty of diving on the weekends.
That's very true, I found that after several years diving really hurt my back while working inside has allowed me to heal. I do not get to get paid for diving anymore though!
No one says its the healthiest its ever been

I mean like everyone knows that the ocean needs help with all the polution and the coral reefs
Very true, but people are also tired of the negativity and bad news. That's why I wish I could be sharing lots of positivity. :)
Hmm very interesting 🧐
Think it's important to show the reality underwater
i hope that this is not a too private question, but how do you deal with your retirement arrangement? Especially also coming from Switzerland, i did also always dream about working as a dive instructor uproad. But if i think about skipping one year of AVS/AHV and not having anpension fund, i almost panick. And i can not imagine, to not have the choice to live in CH whe i am old. How do you feel about that?
Really great question! When I started teaching diving, I never thought about my retirement and until quite recently. I have been working as a teacher so that contributes to it now, but I have a lot left than many colleagues due to traveling for diving. I wouldn't exchange the experiences of teaching diving around the world. Would you lose your Swiss citizenship / residency?
Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. Any thoughts on when is too young to progress through the ranks? My son just finished his junior advanced OW but his instructor recommended he wait another year before the rescue diver course so he’s going to do nitrox now instead.
How old is your son? 12-14 year old can get their junior rescue card, so would probably be good to wait until he is able to do his full adult one. Dive master and instructor is only possible from 18 anyway, so may as well space out the certifications. Does he want to be a professional diver?
@@OceanPancake , he’s 14. Don’t know if he wants to be a professional diver but he’s really loving it right now. Thanks for the reply.
